1. Arely is an older adult being discharged with a continuous pulse oximeter that her family will help to monitor at home. Create teaching materials that they will find helpful about reasons for abnormal pulse oximeter readings and when they should become concerned. Educational material should state that pulse oximeter readings can be impacted by several things, including patient movement, nail polish, skin oils and dirt, poor perfusion, lighting, anemia, and equipment malfunction. The patient should troubleshoot each of these and try again. 2. Dillon is an 8-year-old who was recently diagnosed with childhood asthma and is being sent home with a peak flowmeter. Design educational materials to send home with Dillon and his family. Educational material should include proper use of a peak flowmeter, including the need for deep breaths and forceful exhalations for accurate readings. Material should also cover the need to perform the reading three times and to record the highest reading. Medications may be adjusted accordingly. The health-care provider will make recommendations about when to seek treatment.
3. Jonathan, a 68-year-old with COPD, is being discharged with oxygen. Design education material to send home with him and his wife.
Safety is important, and materials should include the prevention of injury because oxygen is highly flammable. Jonathan should also be taught how to manage his stroller.
4. Mary, a 42-year-old, is going home with a tracheostomy after being ventilated for COVID-19. Prepare teaching material for Mary and her family about how to care for and maintain tracheostomy care. Teaching for Mary and her family should include instruction about the tube's outer cannula, cuff, obturator, and inner cannula. They should be taught about safety, cleaning, and complications that can occur.
T IPS
There are many factors to consider when caring for the patient with oxygenation problems. This activity is designed to help students become aware of some of the issues and teaching that accompany this challenging topic.
G OALS
Students will strengthen understanding of various components of patient teaching while working together within a team.
O NLINE A PPLICATION
• Post the scenarios to the class discussion. Require that students reply to one of the scenarios and then post a new patient scenario that they write.
