G OALS
This activity encourages students to learn and understand common diagnostic tests that support the respiratory system.
O NLINE A PPLICATION
• Ask students to complete a worksheet and upload it to the course. • Build an online matching game with all of the information in the table. Have students complete for points.
But Why? Understanding the Connection Between Respiratory Interventions and Pathophysiological Changes
D IRECTIONS
Ask students to work in pairs. For each of the following questions, ask students to provide an explanation. Answers should be discussed as a class. A student handout for this activity is included at the end of this document. Sample answers are provided here.
1. Why is a peak flowmeter used during an asthma attack?
A peak flowmeter measures the amount of air that can be exhaled with forcible effort. During an asthma attack, bronchoconstriction occurs and the exhaled volume will decrease. Measuring the exhaled volume will identify the severity of the asthma attack. 2. Why is positioning important for maximum ventilation?
An upright position sitting slightly forward will allow for maximum diaphragmatic excursion and lung expansion. It is called the orthopneic position.
