“F.A. Davis saved me when I was asked to teach an online med term course with no experience. I don’t know what I would have done without them.” Candice Piper, RN Professor of Nursing Chaffey College
“I always look at books as though I were the student and ask myself if I would like to read this. F.A. Davis’s Medical Terminology Systems book was organized very well; was easy to read; and had great pictures and charts.”
As a Professor of Nursing at Chaffey College, Candice Piper has 15 years of experience teaching all of the courses in the school’s Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program. The LVN program is part of the school’s Health, Wellness, and Athletics Community which also offers a variety of other Nursing and Health Professions degrees and certificates, including Vocational Nursing to Registered Nursing; Associate Degree Nursing; Dental Assisting; Radiologic Technology; and Nursing Assistant. In spring of 2020 when the pandemic forced schools to move online, Candice was asked to start teaching a fully online Beginning Medical Terminology course. This course admits students who will move into a variety of health-care careers, including nursing, radiologic technology, physical therapy, and kinesiology. Candice currently teaches three classes each Spring, Fall, and Summer term with about 35 students per class. The challenge: Learning how to teach a new class using a new medium When Candice was tasked with quickly launching a fully online Medical Terminology course, she was apprehensive. “I said, ‘oh, I’ve never taught medical terminology,’” she laughs. “But I like a challenge, so I said, ‘let’s do this!’” Not only did she lack experience teaching medical terminology, but she also had never taught online. Her first step was to take a class so that she could be certified to teach online. Next, she had to find the right materials to support the curriculum and course objectives. The solution: F.A. Davis’s medical terminology text and Medical Language Lab Candice had worked with F.A. Davis before and her experiences had always been positive. She asked her Educational Consultant to present their solution and reviewed it along with materials from other publishers. Candice loved the F.A. Davis solution. “I always look at books as though I were the student and ask myself if I would like to read this. F.A. Davis’s Medical Terminology Systems book was organized very well; was easy to read; and had great pictures and charts.” Then her Educational Consultant showed her the Medical Language Lab online materials. “I was so impressed that something like this even existed. It was just perfect for our class. Everything was there for me to get started; I didn’t have to create my own assignments and exercises.” Students can purchase either the print version of the Medical Terminology Systems text with access to an ebook or the e-book only version of the text. Medical Language Lab is included in the purchase of both. Chaffey College uses the Canvas learning management system. The Medical Terminology course is asynchronous with no required meetings. Students can complete their assignments whenever they want. In order to make this work, Candice delivers an optional Orientation session on the first day of class. This is recorded so that students who miss it can watch the video. She also created one video that explains how students purchase their course materials and
gain access to the content, and another video showing how to complete the Medical Language Lab modules. She pre- records all lectures. Students are required to read the chapter, listen to the lecture, complete the activities in Medical Language Lab, and take a quiz. Throughout the course, Candice leads discussions using the learning activities at the end of each chapter. The result: Students like the course and are getting A’s Candice reports that students enjoy the course and find the course materials to be valuable. “ The students love Medical Language Lab. The exercises are super fun and interactive. It’s not boring at all.” “Don’t Tip the Scale,” which requires students to move words around while trying to keep the scale balanced, is an example of an activity her students really enjoy. She also notes that the “ Critical Listening ” activities followed by questions related to the audio really help her students master the content. “The students are doing these fun activities, but they are also learning. I know that if they complete all of the material, they have mastered the content. It shows on their quiz results. Most of the students get an A on the quiz which shows me that Medical Language Lab is doing its job.” Students are also doing well in the course overall. More than 90% are getting an A grade in the class. “I’ve never had a class as a whole do this well, and I credit Medical Language Lab for that. The students wouldn’t be doing this well if they didn’t have a good textbook and a way to actually practice the material.” The integration with Canvas also benefits the students. They can login to their Canvas accounts and all of their class material is there, including the e-book and Medical Language Lab. Activities are graded automatically and students can see their results immediately. The automatic grading also benefits faculty as it saves so much time. The F.A. Davis experience: “I can’t say enough about how wonderful it’s been working with F.A. Davis,” Candice says. “Whenever I have a question or there is a problem, F.A. Davis is on it right away. They work really hard to get it fixed and they are always successful.” Her F.A. Davis Educational Consultant provided training for Candice on how to use the Medical Language Lab software and also met with her students via Zoom to go through the book and its resources. Candice is also impressed with the technical support. The team met with her several times to work through the integration with Canvas. “It was all very technical, but they were so nice. I can tell that they really care about making sure my students and I have a great experience. They work very hard at that and do a fantastic job.”
