Chapter Practice Exercises

1. Spot the Wrong Terms The following paragraph contains seven medical terms or abbreviations that are wrong (they don’t match what is being described). Identify which terms are incor- rect and write the correct terms. Mary is a first-year medical student who plans to become a cardiologist. One morning, she saw a man collapse on the street. She first looked to see whether the scene was safe and then rushed toward the victim. She shouted, “Are you okay?” and called for help. She quickly checked the man’s breathing and then started to perform CDR. Emergency medical services (EMS) technicians arrived with an ACD, turned it on, and attached the pads to the patient’s chest. The device instructed the technicians to give a shock and resume resuscitation. The patient was taken to the hospital by EMS. A cholesterol test was done as a car- diac marker and a catheterization was performed to diagnose any occlusions in the coronary arteries. The patient recovered after undergoing a CAPG surgery, which restored blood flow to the damaged heart muscles. The pulmonologist explained that the patient had suffered from severe atherosclerosis of the coro- nary arteries, which led to his cardiac arrest.
