“F.A. Davis has been a pioneer in offering innovative and effective products that are preparing my students for Next Generation NCLEX. To have an online experience that mimics what students will see on the exam has been a huge help for our program.” Rachel Loukota, MSN, BSN Assistant Professor, Washington Adventist University

Rachel says the students appreciate the Personalized Learning modules because they are so visual and easy to understand. Students can go through the lessons and then answer questions to determine their comprehension of the topic. “ I like that they can see their scores and then go through the lesson again if they haven’t scored well. ”

Rachel assigns all the Clinical Judgment modules and encourages the students to redo them, especially if they are struggling. “ The Clinical Judgment modules not only help the students learn the content, but they also give them hands- on practice and confidence taking electronic exams in the NGN style. ” For the Advantage Quizzes, Rachel requires an 80% grade or higher. She appreciates that she can reassign the quiz if students fall below that grade. The result: A more active classroom Rachel began using Davis Advantage products in Fall of 2021. She asked the students for feedback. “ The students said Advantage was easier to read and understand, and they liked the online process that allowed them to learn the material, apply it with the case studies, and then complete the quizzes. ” Perhaps the most exciting result is that her students are challenging her to incorporate more active learning assignments and reduce the number of lectures. “ F.A. Davis has so many resources that support a flipped classroom. I can include multiple activities with each chapter. ” In fact, for the upcoming semester, Rachel plans to record lectures using the F.A. Davis PowerPoint templates and then spend classroom time doing activities for some of her courses. The F.A. Davis experience: Rachel says working with F.A. Davis has been a great experience. “Our sales representative made the transition to the Advantage products easy. She has been extremely responsive and helped us every step of the way to ensure a smooth implementation of the products.” Rachel notes that F.A. Davis provided training for both faculty and students. “It’s not always easy transitioning to new technology, but there have been no headaches. It’s been really nice.” F.A. As an Assistant Professor at Washington Adventist University, Rachel Loukota teaches Fundamentals, Maternal/ Newborn and Dosage Calculations in a BSN program with 40 to 60 students. The students come from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, with a mix of traditional and transfer students and a large influx of international students. Prior to COVID, the entire curriculum was taught in the classroom, but since the pandemic they have transitioned to a hybrid program with a combination of lecture and activities. They plan to be fully on campus again by Fall 2022. The challenge: Preparing for Next Generation NCLEX ® (NGN) while supporting a diverse student population including students with English as a second language Rachel’s biggest challenge is preparing both her faculty and her students for the NGN. “There is a procrastination issue; faculty think it’s not here yet, so we don’t have to think about it. But we need to get everyone on the same page now and make sure we are getting the students ready now.” In addition, Rachel needs materials that will support her diverse student population, including her English as a second language students (ESL). According to Rachel, these students struggle with certain terms that may be common to English speakers. “This poses an additional challenge when preparing for NCLEX since there are questions on the NCLEX that may include words ESL students aren’t familiar with.”

The solution: Davis Advantage

Several years ago, the director of the BSN program asked the students to complete a survey. Many students complained that the books they were using at the time were too hard to understand. Rachel agreed. “When I reviewed the F.A. Davis products I was immediately struck by how much easier they are to read and understand. This is a big plus for our students. The content isn’t dumbed down, it is just presented more clearly and in a way that helps the students grasp the content more easily.” Rachel also appreciates that the Davis Advantage package for each course includes the print book, the ebook and the online component for one price. “Some products from other publishers require the students to buy the online materials separately. I love that F.A. Davis makes it so easy.” Some students prefer print and others prefer the electronic version of the book, says Rachel. “I love that we can have both. I encourage them to use their ebook if they are struggling with a topic. They can use the ‘find’ option to highlight the specific material they need to review.” Rachel also loves the Davis Advantage online materials. “When I saw Advantage, I was impressed that it provided such a great way for us to prepare students for NGN and knew that it would help us fill that gap in our program.”
