BSN & MSN | Lincoln Memorial University

“F.A Davis PowerPoints and image banks are amazing. They accompany the text very well! Students’ various modes of learning are always augmented with F.A. Davis materials!”

Jami England, DNP, BS, AS, MS Assistant Professor of Nursing Caylor School of Nursing Lincoln Memorial University

Jami England is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) teaching in both the MSN and BSN programs. The MSN program includes both an in-person and online cohort of students. Jami teaches “ almost everything except pharmacology ” including the young and middle adult class, pediatrics, and geriatrics. In the BSN program she teaches pathophysiology, leadership, and pharmacology. She has been teaching at LMU for 10 years. The choice for readability, currency, and relevance Jami has been using the F.A. Davis titles for the MSN program since she started teaching at LMU. “ We have stuck with F.A. Davis through the years because we like the readability, usability, and layout of the books. ” She appreciates that the Primary Care: The Art and Science of Advanced Practice Nursing—An Interprofessional Approach by Lynne Dunphy, Jill E. Winland- Brown, Brian Oscar Porter, and Debera J. Thomas is “ very up-to-date and specific to what the students will see as primary care advanced practice nurses .” In addition, Jami says the content covered matches their topic list and is presented in the order that they teach the material. Regarding the layout, Jami notes that the tables are extremely helpful for students. When choosing a geriatric book, Jami says they looked at several options and “ the F.A. Davis book, Advanced Practice Nursing in the Care of Older Adults: The Art and Science of Advanced Practice Nursing—An Interprofessional Approach by Laurie Kennedy-Malone and Evelyn Duffy, was the best one regarding content covered and readability. ” In the BSN program, Jami has been using Davis Advantage for Pathophysiology by Theresa Capriotti for about 10 years. When asked what she likes most about the book, Jami says “ everything! ” Specifically, Jami points to the clinical concepts, the alerts that are in red, objectives and key terms, and the “ wonderful ” images. “ I use the images on my PowerPoints for lecture. ” The results for students Jami says that students find Capriotti very readable. They also appreciate the “ Making Connections ” sections at the end of the chapter which help them learn the most important concepts. “ That’s the way they have to study for NCLEX®. Pathophysiology is one of those topics that goes through the entire nursing program, so being able to master this class is important to student success .” For the past 2 years, LMU has had a 100% pass rate for their BSN program. “ We’re very proud of that .” The F.A. Davis experience “ We’ve had a great experience working with F.A. Davis. The rep is very responsive. We have no problems getting copies for teaching and books to review. ” Jami says they are looking to utilize Davis Advantage and Davis Edge more in the coming semester based on a “ lunch and learn ” sponsored by F.A. Davis. “ We think it’s important to start incorporating more technology in the program because that’s how students like to learn. And I think having the additional practice with the interactive exercises helps support what they are learning in the book. ”
