“The F.A. Davis medical terminology program has allowed us to deliver fully remote classes and still achieve a 95% course completion rate.” Cheryl A. Amantea, MBA, BS Assistant Professor & Coordinator of the Professional
“We see the majority of our students coming in with a grade of 80 or higher on these exams after they have completed the reading and assignments in MLL.”

their assignments multiple times until they understand the material and receive an acceptable grade. The instructor advocates that students do not submit their MLL assignments unless their grade is 80 or higher; if they fall below 80 on any of the assignments, the instructor asks the student to re-do that assignment. Faculty give two closed book exams on Blackboard: a fifty-question mid-term covering Chapters 1-8 and a fifty-question final covering Chapters 9-16. The questions are true/false or multiple choice. The exams are redesigned each year and instructors use F.A. Davis Test Banks as a general guide. However, instructors will use their own wording to discourage students from using the internet to find the answers. Students are allowed 60 minutes to complete each fifty-question exam, so they must know the material to complete it within that timeframe. The result: 95% of students successfully complete the course Since CCRI began using F.A. Davis’s Medical Terminology Systems book and Medical Language Lab, 95% of their students have successfully completed the course. This includes all remote and high school students as well as the students enrolled in traditional hybrid classes. Cheryl attributes the completion rate to how Medical Language Lab is set up: the students can complete assignments multiple times until they reach a grade of 80. In addition, Cheryl praises the overall design of the book and the online program, citing diagrams, images, and outstanding captions that help students understand the material more easily. “ It’s obvious that whoever designs the materials has actually taken courses and knows the shortcomings that come with other books. ” Cheryl notes that MLL saves students time since they don’t have to be in class for the course. The ability to offer a fully remote course also allows CCRI to enroll more students into the program and offer the program to students from other states. In addition, Cheryl appreciates that MLL is open for the students for 2 full years. “ I hear from students I had over a year ago that tell me they still use the program if they need a refresher. ” The F.A. Davis experience: Cheryl has worked in higher education as an instructor and administrator for forty years. “ I always tell other faculty members this: for any given subject there are usually several very good textbooks available. However, it is the support materials and the support staff that should factor into the decision as well. ” Overall, Cheryl has had a great experience with F.A. Davis support materials and staff and states that her sales representative is outstanding in every way. “ She keeps in touch and periodically sends informative e-mails. If I need her, I can reach her quickly and she responds within 24 hours. ” Cheryl acknowledges that sometimes there are glitches in using the online program and faculty occasionally make mistakes with grading and other functionality. Cheryl praises F.A. Davis for quickly responding to the issues and working diligently to solve the problems. “ It took several weeks for the IT staff at F.A. Davis to work out some of our issues, but they stuck with it and were very polite and completely professional when I inquired about the status of the problem. ”
As Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Professional Studies Certificate and Degree Program, Cheryl Amantea is responsible for a medical terminology course enrolling approximately 180 students each academic year. The course is part of the Medical Insurance and Billing Certificate Program (MIBC) and the Professional Studies/Medical Administrative Assistant–Associate in Science Degree Program (MDAD) which includes a variety of majors. The student body at CCRI enjoys considerable diversity in ages, cultures, and experiences. The average age of a CCRI Professional Studies student is 32. Most students are employed on a full- or part-time basis and have family and home responsibilities. For many, English is not their primary language. Graduating students will transfer to four-year colleges and universities or complete career-oriented programs which can lead to immediate employment in technical fields. Additionally, there are classes comprised of all high school students who are taught remotely via CCRI’s Learning Management System (Blackboard) or in person at their high schools. The course is taught by a CCRI faculty member. There are also students who enroll in CCRI specifically for the Medical Terminology course. These students may be located anywhere in the United States and take the Medical Terminology course remotely because it is required before they enroll in a Medical Assistant Program. The Medical Terminology course was traditionally a hybrid course. However, during the Summer and Fall of 2021 and Spring of 2022, the school ran eleven fully remote Medical Terminology classes. These are completely online with no live or recorded lectures. The school continues to deliver classes online except for some of the high school classes. The challenge: A large and diverse student body that often struggles with computer skills With such a diverse population of students and the need to offer fully remote courses, CCRI needs an online program that enables students to effectively learn the material and pass their assignments and exams with an 80 or higher. The program must also work with CCRI’s Blackboard Learning Management System since students are responsible for keeping track of assignments, exams, and due dates on that website. Because the student population is made up of many high school students and incoming freshman, many have not mastered keyboarding and are not comfortable working on various websites. Therefore, the program needed to be intuitive and user friendly. “ These students know how to text and use social media, but they don’t always have the computer skills necessary to navigate their way through a course and submit assignments ,” says Cheryl. The solution: A book plus online program that enables successful completion of the course CCRI has been using Medical Language Lab (MLL) for Medical Terminology Systems: A Body Systems Approach by Barbara A. Gylys and Mary Ellen Wedding for three years. They first adopted the text more than 10 years ago. The program allows students to work remotely and to complete their work on their own time. During a 15-week semester, students can complete all 16 modules of Medical Language Lab on the F.A. Davis website. They are able to complete
