Exchange of Ideas: Patient Scenarios D IRECTIONS
• Divide students into groups of three to five. Assign each group a section of the spiritual assessment tool from the list below. (Larger groups of students will result in some students having the same topic.) Groups should not tell one another which section they have been assigned. • Each group then creates a very brief patient case scenario that contains enough relevant information for others to identify which part of spirituality is being assessed. Include patient data, clinical manifestations, and any other signs and symptoms as appropriate. • Groups then exchange their patient scenario with other groups. Each group attempts to identify the other group’s section. • Sections of the Spiritual Assessment Tool: o Meaning and purpose T IPS You can ask the student to also plan care for their fictional patient based on their scenario. Ask the students about the importance of spirituality and how this information will help guide nursing interventions. G OALS The purpose of this activity is for students to be able to identify the different areas of assessment of spirituality to help formulate more appropriate nursing diagnoses and guide patient care. O NLINE A PPLICATION o Inner strengths o Interconnections o Relationships o Behavior and activities o Environment • Break students up into small online groups and assign one section each. Each group then creates a very brief patient scenario that contains enough relevant information for others to identify the section of the assessment. Include patient data, clinical manifestations, and any other signs and symptoms as appropriate. This scenario will be posted to an online discussion board. • Assign sections of the Spiritual Assessment Tool as an individual activity and have students post their patient scenario to the discussion board where other students need to guess the stage.
