Detra Edwards has been a Nursing Instructor in the Southeastern Community College LPN program since 2018. She teaches in the Practical Nursing II course, covering lifespan content in their concept-based curriculum. The F.A. Davis solution at work Detra has been a fan of F.A. Davis products for many years. She appreciates the level of the material, observing that the content is easy to understand; doesn’t use wording that is above the level of her LPN students; and is organized in a logical way that mimics the way she teaches her course. “My students find the content in F.A. Davis books easier to read and understand than the books they have had in previous classes.” In addition, the books work well for her concept-based curriculum. “I was missing a lot of exemplars from my previous books, but the F.A. Davis books cover the content I need.” The Davis Advantage online resources are an important part of Detra’s program. For the past two years, she has required students to complete Davis Advantage activities, and as a result, she has noticed an improvement in test scores. “I have seen a big improvement in my students’ performance since requiring them to do the work in Davis Advantage.” Each week Detra assigns readings and online activities that support the concepts she is covering in class. Students have one week to finish the work. The work that the students complete in Davis Advantage is counted as a participation grade and a ticket to class. “Making Davis Advantage part of their grade has made completion of the work more important. Before this was required, there wasn’t much interaction in class. Now I have noticed a lot more engagement.” In class, Detra focuses on active learning activities from the F.A. Davis instructor materials. “They have to do the work prior to class because they have to be ready to participate when they get here. We don’t do a lot of lecturing in class; I like for them to come to me with questions.” Detra has noticed a correlation between the amount of time students spend with Davis Advantage activities and their test grades. “The more they are engaged with F.A. Davis online, the better their grades are. They understand the concepts and exemplars better, and if they are weak in particular areas, they can get customized remediation from the Personalized Learning activities.” This has also paid off in high NCLEX scores. “We have had 100% pass rate on NCLEX-PN for the past two years, ever since I started incorporating the Davis Advantage activities as a course requirement.” Detra appreciates the instructor resources provided by F.A. Davis. “I really like that I can create custom quizzes, focusing on questions that relate to the specific content I am covering, to test my students understanding of material as we go through the class.” She also uses the PowerPoints to help her create lectures, which she makes available to her students, and uses the Test Bank for the course exams
