“Davis Advantage is really interactive which keeps the students engaged. I like that they have to do a pre-test to see what they learned from the lecture and reading; then they can do the actual lesson which gives them more confidence to complete the post-test. They can drive their learning using this approach.” Rebekah recently added Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Success: NCLEX-Style Q&A Review by Catherine Melfi Curtis and Audra Baker Fegley as a required purchase for her students. “We know that students struggle with communication, mental health, and psychosocial issues, so I’ve made this book a requirement.” The students generally use this on their own, but if they aren’t doing well in class Rebekah suggests that they use this as a remediation tool and to prepare for the final. “I love the rationales in the book; it gives the rationale for the right answer as well as the rationale for the wrong answer which is really helpful for the students as they are trying to learn.” The F.A. Davis Experience Rebekah says she has always had great results working with F.A. Davis. “Our rep is extremely responsive, and they always have the best interest of the students in mind.” She also appreciates that they continue to make improvements by adding solutions like Davis Advantage. “The book has always been well-written, and I’ve always liked it, but the icing on the cake has been the clinical judgment activities and quizzing with Davis Advantage.” Rebekah says the students also really like F. A. Davis. “Davis is not overwhelming for them as compared to books and platforms from other publishers. Davis keeps it simple.” About Hazard Community & Technical College HCTC is a member of the Kentucky Community and Technical College system with four locations and more than 200 degrees. “I have noticed an improvement in test scores since we started using Davis Advantage. I think this is a result of requiring these online activities in addition to having students read the book.” Juli Lane, DNP, RN, CNE, SANE-P Associate Professor Harding University, Carr College of Nursing
Juli Lane teaches Psychiatric Nursing in the BSN and ABSN programs at Harding University. She has been using Davis Advantage for Townsend’s Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing by Karyn I. Morgan in both programs for about 6 years. The F.A. Davis solution at work Since Davis Advantage includes the electronic book, Juli does not encourage students to buy a hard copy unless they feel that they need or want it. “This saves them money and is also an efficient way to study and learn because they can access everything they need from their laptop.” Juli likes the way the content is presented. “The book includes a lot of tables and boxes that highlight key content, and that content is not repeated in the narrative. I tell my students to read the tables and boxes because it’s an efficient way to study.” Juli also reminds her students to review the care plans. “The care plans are great. They are presented in an easy-to-follow format with the rationale right there.” Juli’s course consists of weekly “modules.” For each module, students are assigned 1-3 chapters of reading along with Davis Advantage’s Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) activities which are due at the end of the week.
