Davis Advantage for Townsend’s Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing by Karyn I. Morgan combines an easy-to-read textbook with an innovative online program to create an immersive learning experience for students and an integrated solution for instructors. Through nine editions, this text has provided a holistic approach to mental health nursing that explores nursing diagnoses for both physiological and psychological disorders, while highlighting the essential content students need to build a solid foundation. Using a unique and proven approach across a Learn-Apply-Assess continuum, Davis Advantage engages students to help them make the connections to key topics. It aligns seamlessly with the textbook and equips instructors with actionable analytics to track students’ progress, remediate where needed, and facilitate an active learning environment. Read on to see how three schools are using Davis Advantage for Townsend’s Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing to achieve positive outcomes in their programs.

“Davis Advantage has helped my students learn how to answer questions on their mental health nursing exams.” Rebekah Bingham, MSN, RN, SANE Associate Professor Hazard Community and Technical College

Rebekah Bingham teaches Mental Health Nursing in the ADN and LPN programs at Hazard Community and Technical College where she has worked for 8 years. The school has been using Davis Advantage for Townsend’s Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing as long as Rebekah has been teaching there. The F.A. Davis solution at work “One of the reasons we like Townsend’s Essentials is that it can be used for both the ADN and LPN students. Since I teach in both programs, it’s really helpful to be able to use the same book.” Rebekah notes that it works for both levels because “it’s written well and it’s not confusing for the student.” She also appreciates the way the units and chapters are structured. “I can use the book exactly as it’s presented because it follows the way we teach the course.” The course is 6 weeks, which Rebekah acknowledges is not a lot of time to get through the material. “The students have to listen to a lot of lectures on their own and come to class prepared or they will be left behind.” Rebekah uses the PowerPoints that are part of the Davis Advantage instructor resources for her pre-recorded lectures. She employs flipped classroom strategies such as assigning “teach the teacher” topics that require students to prepare a presentation to teach the class. The topic presentation is their weekly “ticket to class” and counts as 5% of their grade. “They have to listen to the lectures, read the book, and come to class prepared with their presentation to be successful in this course.” After class, Rebekah assigns activities from Davis Advantage which count as 10% of their grade. “The students basically have to complete all of the activities in Davis Advantage to get the 10%. They are assigned with the specific unit we are covering and all must be completed prior to their unit exam; this is their ‘ticket to exam.’” The benchmark pass rate for exams is 80%. If students don’t meet the benchmark, Rebekah will create a remediation quiz from Davis Advantage that focuses on the areas where they didn’t do well.

“Davis Advantage is really interactive which keeps the students engaged. I like that they have to do a pre-test to see what they learned from the lecture and reading; then they can do the actual lesson which gives them more confidence to complete the post-test. They can drive their learning using this approach.” Rebekah recently added Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Success: NCLEX-Style Q&A Review by Catherine Melfi Curtis and Audra Baker Fegley as a required purchase for her students. “We know that students struggle with communication, mental health, and psychosocial issues, so I’ve made this book a requirement.” The students generally use this on their own, but if they aren’t doing well in class Rebekah suggests that they use this as a remediation tool and to prepare for the final. “I love the rationales in the book; it gives the rationale for the right answer as well as the rationale for the wrong answer which is really helpful for the students as they are trying to learn.” The F.A. Davis Experience Rebekah says she has always had great results working with F.A. Davis. “Our rep is extremely responsive, and they always have the best interest of the students in mind.” She also appreciates that they continue to make improvements by adding solutions like Davis Advantage. “The book has always been well-written, and I’ve always liked it, but the icing on the cake has been the clinical judgment activities and quizzing with Davis Advantage.” Rebekah says the students also really like F. A. Davis. “Davis is not overwhelming for them as compared to books and platforms from other publishers. Davis keeps it simple.” About Hazard Community & Technical College HCTC is a member of the Kentucky Community and Technical College system with four locations and more than 200 degrees. With a combined enrollment of just over 3,000 students, HCTC offers associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs.

“I have noticed an improvement in test scores since we started using Davis Advantage. I think this is a result of requiring these online activities in addition to having students read the book.” Juli Lane, DNP, RN, CNE, SANE-P Associate Professor Harding University, Carr College of Nursing

Juli Lane teaches Psychiatric Nursing in the BSN and ABSN programs at Harding University. She has been using Davis Advantage for Townsend’s Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing by Karyn I. Morgan in both programs for about 6 years. The F.A. Davis solution at work Since Davis Advantage includes the electronic book, Juli does not encourage students to buy a hard copy unless they feel that they need or want it. “This saves them money and is also an efficient way to study and learn because they can access everything they need from their laptop.” Juli likes the way the content is presented. “The book includes a lot of tables and boxes that highlight key content, and that content is not repeated in the narrative. I tell my students to read the tables and boxes because it’s an efficient way to study.” Juli also reminds her students to review the care plans. “The care plans are great. They are presented in an easy-to-follow format with the rationale right there.” Juli’s course consists of weekly “modules.” For each module, students are assigned 1-3 chapters of reading along with Davis Advantage’s Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) activities which are due at the end of the week. She also assigns the quizzing

exercises and students are expected to complete those before the applicable exam. “Students can do the quizzing as they go along or they can do it all right before the exam; whatever works for them.” Students receive a completion grade for completing the PLP and quizzing exercises. Juli gives 4 exams each semester plus a final exam. She uses the test bank that accompanies the textbook as a basis for her exams because she wants to make sure she is testing on material that students are learning in the book and online program. “The test bank is very useful as a starting point, but I do tweak the stem or the responses for most of the questions to ensure test security.” Juli is seeing positive results since requiring Davis Advantage activities in her course. “I believe that Davis Advantage helps prepare my students for their exams. I’ve noticed an improvement in test scores. The clinical judgment paperwork that they do in clinical has been very good. I think this is a result of requiring these online activities in addition to having students read the book.” She notes that the quizzing exercises are so important for NCLEX. “I like the Next Gen questions and give extra credit for those. Students have also told me that the Davis Advantage Next Gen questions help them prepare for their standardized exams.” Juli really likes the convenience and usability of Davis Advantage. “I like that the Personalized Learning Plans (PLP) and quizzes are already done for me. And it’s very easy to carry over a course from one semester to the next without having to recreate the entire course.” She also appreciates that students seem to like the Davis Advantage solution. “I get positive feedback that the book is easy to read and comprehend. I’ve even received positive comments about the PLP. Students like how it summarizes the material and highlights the most important points.” For clinical, Juli requires students to purchase the Pocket Guide to Townsend’s Psychiatric Nursing by Karyn I. Morgan. “Students carry this to clinical so they can look things up throughout the day, including care plan information and meds.” The students also use it as a reference to help them with their clinical care plan assignments. The F.A. Davis experience Juli appreciates the service she receives from F.A. Davis. “There are so many options for help including how-to videos and online chat. But I don’t hesitate to pick up the phone when I need to. I have never had a problem getting a quick and helpful response from F. A. Davis. The service is always great.” About Harding University Harding began as a senior college in 1924, when two junior colleges, Arkansas Christian College and Harper College, merged their facilities and assets, adopted the new name of Harding College, and located on the campus of Arkansas Christian in Morrilton, Arkansas. In 1934 Harding was moved to its present site in Searcy, Arkansas. The board of trustees approved the study’s recommended change of Harding to university status, and on Aug. 27, 1979, the name of the institution officially became Harding University. The university offers more than 110 undergraduate majors; 14 preprofessional programs; and more than 40 graduate and professional programs.

“The patient stories in each chapter of Townsend are great. And the students love them, too.” Sooksai Kaewbua, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, RN Visiting Lecturer of Nursing Berea College

Sooksai is a visiting professor at Berea College. She has been teaching psychiatric mental health nursing in their BSN program for 3 years using Davis Advantage for Townsend’s Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing by Karyn I. Morgan.

The F.A. Davis solution at work “When I started teaching at Berea, the Department Chair asked me to review a number of psychiatric nursing textbooks. Out of all the books I reviewed, I liked this one, and I think students do, too, because it’s more colorful, with lots of pictures and color coding.” She also comments on the way content is presented with shorter chapters and lots of tables and boxes. “Students don’t have a lot of tolerance for long reading assignments. Each chapter is short and to the point and covers just what students need to know.” Sooksai is a practicing psychiatric nurse, as well as a professor, and she uses lots of personal stories and short videos in her classroom. “I will show a short, 3-minute video and then ask students to write out the symptoms that they notice from the video. I then have them go back to the textbook to identify what they might have missed.” One of the book features that Sooksai likes the most are the patient stories. “The students like these, too. They will often bring these up in class and find them very relatable.” Sooksai emphasizes that Townsend is very current, and evidence based. “I told the Department Chair that I really like this book because I feel like I am reading an evidence-based research study. All of the references are current.” To create exams, Sooksai uses the test bank that comes with the instructor resources. “I think the F.A. Davis questions are really good. They are challenging; they match the level required for NCLEX; and they help the students prepare.” Sooksai gives her students 4 quizzes and 4 exams each semester. “The students sometimes complain that I’m giving too many quizzes, but when they take their standardized exams, they always do well on the mental health portion as compared to the national average.” About Berea College From the very beginning, Berea College was founded to be accessible to people who otherwise could not afford a college education. As the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, Berea was open to all people in the region, regardless of race, gender or ability to pay. No Berea student has paid tuition since 1892. Students with strong academic potential and financial need are encouraged to apply. Berea is academically competitive. The average ACT score of our students is about 25—which is above the national average—and more than half of our first-year students ranked in the top fifth of their high school class.
