G OALS This activity helps students gain an understanding that renal failure can occur for distinct reasons. O NLINE A PPLICATION • Assign the student handout or drawing activity as an individual assignment. • Create a discussion board activity in which the types of renal failure are posted and students provided one or two characteristics associated with that form of failure. Patient Education: Different Forms of Renal Failure D IRECTIONS • Divide students into small groups. • Assign each group one of the main forms of renal failure: prerenal, intrarenal and postrenal. • Based on their assigned type of renal failure, ask students to create patient-based educational material. • Students should focus on being able to convey overall concepts in a patient-friendly manner. • Some ideas to consider are listed below. The patient education material should include etiology, assessment, and possible management for the different forms of renal failure. • After students create their patient education materials, they can share between groups, with groups serving as “patients to be educated. ” Examples For prerenal failure, students may want to discuss how problems with the heart, for example, may affect the kidneys, and how supporting the heart will help kidney function. For intrarenal failure, students could provide educational material for a patient who has suffered damage from a nephrotoxic medication. Students could discuss how common this is, what can be done to support the kidneys and so on. T IPS Remind students that patients may have very little contextual understanding of the role the kidneys play in overall health, but also, how overall health may impact renal function. Showing “basic” connections such as the relationship between kidney, ureters, and bladder is often needed. G OALS This activity helps students to clarify the different types of renal failure and how this may impact patient interactions.
