“When I hear my students telling their peers how helpful the online resources are, I think that’s really positive feedback.”

“The F.A. Davis products seem to focus more effectively on the need-to-know information without a lot of extra ‘fluff.’ This is especially important to me as I’m teaching Level 1 because students will get bogged down if there is too much detail.”

Kelle Shiflett, MSN, RN Assistant Professor of Nursing Riverside College of Health Careers Newport News, VA

The result: Students are more confident and prepared for exams

“Students always have some test anxiety, especially at the beginning of the program,“ says Kelle. “But since we have been using Davis Advantage, I think the students are much more prepared and far less anxious because they’ve already been exposed to the types of questions they are going to see on exams.” Kelle utilizes all of the possible online activities that accompany Basic Nursing: Thinking, Doing, Caring . Prior to the lecture, she assigns the Davis Advantage Personalized Learning activities: the pre-quiz, the video, and the post-assessment quiz. After lecture, the students attend 2 days of labs. At the end of the concept, Kelle assigns the final quiz to test the students’ knowledge. She also encourages students to make their own quizzes for additional practice. “The activities and quizzes aren’t calculated as part of their grade, but I monitor to ensure students have completed them and I use it as a ‘ticket’ to enter class and lab.” She also uses the Advantage resources to expose the students to NCELX-style questions early in the curriculum. Kelle appreciates that the Davis Advantage online resources allow her to monitor the program and individual students. “I can review the overall scores for a concept to see if there is a particular area where scores are weak and go back and review that with students. It also allows me to focus on individual students who come to me for help. I can pull all their scores and see where they are struggling and what I need to focus on.” Perhaps the most positive aspect of using Davis Advantage is that students are telling their peers how helpful the resources are. “I will hear them talk after taking a test and they will share which activities are most helpful for them and why,” she says. “I think it’s very positive when students are convincing others to use the product. This is a new thing that I’ve heard since using Davis Advantage.” The F.A. Davis experience: One of the things that Kelle appreciates about F.A. Davis is that the company really listens and responds to feedback. “When I first started using one of their books, I noticed a couple of errors. They were so appreciative of the feedback and the changes were quickly implemented.” Kelle also notes that F.A. Davis was instrumental in helping the school incorporate the Clinical Judgment activities into their Canvas Learning Management System. “They not only helped with the technical aspects, but also brainstormed with us on how to use these most effectively.” Kelle also appreciates the training and support materials that F.A. Davis provides. “Our rep always offers to come out to train new instructors. She has also done in-person presentations for the students. And she even made a video for us that shows students how to register for the resources and navigate through the Advantage website, including examples of all of the different activities and why those activities are important to their success.” “The support has been outstanding. Whatever we ask for, F.A. Davis responds. We did not have that level of support with our previous vendor,” says Kelle. Kelle also notes that F.A. Davis continually evolves their offerings. “F.A. Davis has been on top of the changes that are happening with Next Generation NCLEX® and I appreciate that they are always improving their products.”

Kelle Shiflett, MSN, RN, is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Riverside College of Health Careers. As a Level 1 Lead in the Associate Degree of Nursing program, she is responsible for teaching fundamentals, skills, and assessment. Their ADN program admits about 200 students annually with new cohorts starting in July, August, and January. While the program is mainly classroom based, they are moving toward a more hybrid model with some lectures being delivered online. This has allowed them to “flip their classroom” and spend more in-person time on labs and simulations. The challenge: Incorporating more online resources and activities into their concept-based curriculum The program had been using materials that were print based with very few online options. “We had a test bank and PowerPoint slides but did not have enough online activities for the students,” says Kelle. “We really wanted to address the different learning styles of our students and provide a variety of options.” The program also wanted to incorporate NCELX-style practice questions starting at the beginning of the program and continuing throughout as the students are learning the material, and there weren’t enough of those available. In addition, Kelle says their previous materials were difficult to use in their concept-based curriculum. “Everything was in separate parts. We had to take sections from all of the different books and put them together ourselves in order to teach the concept.” The solution: Davis Advantage products for core courses About 4 years ago, the program switched to F.A. Davis products. “For one thing, it was much easier for us to use the F.A. Davis products in our concept-based program because that’s the way the material is organized,” says Kelle. They also preferred the way F.A. Davis presented the content, with a much cleaner layout making it easier for students to follow. “The F.A. Davis products seem to focus more effectively on the need-to-know information without a lot of extra ‘fluff.’ This is especially important to me as I’m teaching Level 1 because students will get bogged down if there is too much detail.” An additional bonus was the wealth of online resources available to them. “We knew there was an online component, but we had no idea how much until we got into it. There are materials for the student with every single chapter,” says Kelle. She also appreciates that the materials are easy to use and access for the students. “Students will get frustrated if they can’t figure out how to find their materials. If everything is there for them in one place, it’s more likely they will complete their assignments.” From an instructor standpoint, Kelle says they appreciate that they have a lot of flexibility in how they use the resources. “We can pick and choose how we want to deliver the online materials, so it matches the goals of our course. There are so many options; instructors can determine what works best for them.”

The result was a new educational campus (containing over 96,000 square feet) with modern classrooms, skills laboratories, computer laboratories, and a library with wireless internet access throughout. The name was changed to Riverside College of Health Careers on January 1, 2015. The campus is approximately three miles from Riverside Regional Medical Center (RRMC) which serves as the College’s main clinical practice facility.
