Competency-Based Education: Mastery Teaching, Assessment, and Remediation Tools Competency-based education (CBE) is a learning model that focuses on student outcomes rather than the delivery of content. It shifts the educational focus of students from input expectations, (learning objectives, content delivery, syllabi) to mastery of outcome measures (assessments, evaluations, skill performance). Adopting or adapting to a CBE is challenging. The change in thinking requires intentional planning and development. Some programs elect to adopt a comprehensive curricular re-design, whereas others, choose to strategically adopt more subtle changes. Regardless of your program’s needs, Davis Advantage supports CBE. Determining each student’s mastery of material can be difficult to measure and track. Not with Davis Advantage . The tools support individualized assessment and data tracking with real-time results. For students not meeting the mastery level, they are able to remediate the topic of concern until mastery is achieved. Additionally, Personalized Teaching Plans offer activities that are designed to actively engage students in classroom discussion and double as remediation tools to strengthen students’ mastery of content. Incorporating the Essentials into your Curriculum Course Outline A course outline is a detailed plan of the course material, including topics, assignments, learning activities, and forms of assessment. It is the foundation for collaborative learning between the instructor and the students. Using the Davis Advantage Essentials maps will allow you to intentionally align content with your course outcomes to integrate competency-based learning and the key Domains and Concepts into your curriculum. The Davis Advantage tools can then be used to teach, assess, and remediate your students’ level of mastery.
