“I have nothing but accolades for F.A. Davis. The F.A. Davis [Davis Advantage] platform provides everything an instructor needs to teach the course. The book and online materials were so easy to use. The platform presents all of the content in a consistent, templated format.” Ann Simpson Primary Nurse Program Instructor, LPN Program ECPI University
Ann Simpson teaches Fundamentals in the LPN program at ECPI University. Her course is the first nursing course that students take after completing program pre-requisites. Ann is new to teaching, having joined ECPI in October 2022. She teaches 16-25 students per term in her classroom-based course. The challenge: Transitioning from practicing nurse to educator Ann spent 19 years in practice before becoming a full-time nurse educator in higher education. “I am fortunate that ECPI made my transition easy. They are a success-driven program and provided the tools I needed for a smooth transition.” The solution: F.A. Davis & Davis Advantage making it easy F.A. Davis also helped her get up to speed quickly. “The F.A. Davis [Davis Advantage] platform provides everything an instructor needs to teach the course. The book and online materials were so easy to use. The platform presents all of the content in a consistent, templated format.” Ann also praises her F.A. Davis Educational Consultant. “He spent a lot of time with me going through the online program, showing me all of the tools and how the material is organized. I felt very supported.” Ann relies on the Instructor Resources provided by F.A. Davis to help her teach. “The PowerPoints are excellent. They are concise and highlight key points that students need to know for the exams.” She also appreciates that she has access to hundreds of images she can easily add to the slides. “I love that I don’t have to find images on Google—I can easily get great photos right from the F.A. Davis resources.” The result: 100% student success in their first nursing course “I have not had a student fail my class yet. And I think that the Davis Advantage products are one of the reasons for that.” Students are expected to read the assigned chapters prior to coming to lecture. Ann also uses the accompanying workbook and asks her students to turn in weekly assignments for extra credit. “After the lecture, I expect them to turn in the workbook questions and also complete an open-book quiz that they access from home.” The quizzes come directly from F.A. Davis, so the answers are right in the book. “There is no reason to try and trick students. I want them to learn as much as they can the best way that they can.” Ann also asks the students to watch the videos on Davis Advantage. During class, Ann presents case scenarios to help promote prioritization and critical thinking. “During these exercises, I can really tell who has come to class prepared and who hasn’t.” Ann appreciates the straight-forward, easy to understand approach in the text, Fundamentals of Nursing Care: Concepts, Connections & Skills by Marti Burton and David Smith. “I like that some of the most important terms are in bold red; this is a safety feature that highlights important words students should not forget.” She also loves the case studies. “These real-life stories promote critical thinking and help my students apply the information to patients they will see in clinical.” Ann has learned that the students who read the book do better in class. “When I first started teaching, I didn’t push my students to spend a lot of time with the book because I thought I was giving enough information in my lectures. But then I realized what a wonderful resource the book was, and I told them that if they want to really be successful in the course, they
