“Students pick up the terminology in the first part and then it’s easier for them to understand how it’s being used when they get to the second half of the chapter. And it mimics the way I teach my class during my twice weekly lectures, going through the word parts first and then putting them together and using them in words as we go further through the chapter.” Cindy appreciates the level of the text. “It’s not over the students’ heads. They can read it and understand it. The order of the systems builds on itself very nicely and makes sense to the students.” Medical Language Lab (MLL) is an important part of Cindy’s course, especially considering the online class. “I encourage the online students to get into it a little deeper because I’m not physically interacting with them. Otherwise, I use a very similar approach with my online and face to face students.” Cindy uses the “Build Medical Words” modules as graded assignments in the course, accounting for 15% of their total grade. She says the students appreciate that it’s easy and fun to complete the exercises and they can review their work and see what they missed. The students can complete each exercise as many times as necessary to earn a perfect score before submitting it for grading. “We do this because it allows students to correct the errors they made in their first attempt. Repetition is helpful and it’s part of the learning process. They go back and reflect on their mistakes. It also helps with spelling.” Cindy records a video suggesting additional MLL exercises the students should complete for practice. These exercises are not graded, but Cindy encourages students to do as many as they need to ensure they are familiar with the terms. “I want them to see all of the other resources available to them and let them know that the more they practice, the better their results.” One of the new MLL exercises that Cindy would like to require in the future is the Pronunciation exercises. “Our employers are always telling us that students are not pronouncing medical terms properly. This is a great addition to the MLL, and the students obviously need it.” “F.A. Davis gives the students all the tools in MLL to ensure they are successful. They just need to use them.” She notes that students who complete the required work and take advantage of the additional resources in MLL do better in the course. “The students who are diligent about doing the work, do better. MLL forces the students to use the material more and that’s what helps them learn it. And it’s interactive so it’s not boring.” Working with F.A. Davis Cindy is a huge fan of F.A. Davis. “Our Sales Rep is awesome. Customer support is awesome.” She is especially impressed with how F.A. Davis supports student success. “I feel like F.A. Davis really is interested in helping the students and not just gouging the students.” Cindy also notes that technical support was a huge help in getting started with MLL. “I can’t say enough good things about F.A. Davis. Anytime I have a question or need help, they are extremely responsive.” F.A. Davis Medical Terminology products in use § Medical Terminology Systems: A Body System Approach by Barbara A.
