“I am on a nurse educator site on social media. When people ask about a pathophysiology book, I always recommend F.A. Davis.”
The result: § Students reading the book § Learners engaging in class § Instructors employing an active approach § Course pass rates improving
When Dr. Norris was teaching pathophysiology at University of Alabama, Huntsville, the course was heavily lecture-based. One semester, 25% of the students failed the class. Dr. Norris realized that the current book and the lecture-based approach weren’t working. That’s when she switched to Capriotti and an active learning approach. The 30 students were allowed to retake the course that summer with the new approach and they all passed. “I then got to watch them go all the way through to the end of the program. The difference was night and day. It goes back to the fact that they understood the basics of pathophysiology because they actually read the book and engaged in class. This allowed them to be more successful in their later courses.” Dr. Norris also cites the weekly quizzing as a big factor in the student’s success. The F.A. Davis experience: Dr. Norris appreciates the support she gets from F.A. Davis. “Our rep is very responsive and that’s one reason that I stay with F.A. Davis.” In fact, when they were looking for a new pediatrics book, she reached out to F.A. Davis for help. “Our rep was quick to answer questions and provide us with some options. My colleague ended up choosing the pediatric book by Rudd.” She says students not only like the book because it’s concise and easy to understand, but they also appreciate the continuity with the Davis Advantage platform. “They are familiar with it from their earlier pathophysiology course.” Dr. Norris gives F.A. Davis a 10, on a scale of 1-10, when asked if she would recommend F.A. Davis to other instructors. “I am on a nurse educator site on social media.
