Online Application • Provide students with a list of terms related to COPD. Have them complete flash cards using an online quizzing program like Quizlet (quizlet.com) or Quia (quia.com). • After students have completed their online flash cards, provide the link to other students in the course.
Tell a Tale: Patient With COPD Directions
Ask students to work in pairs. Building on the knowledge gained from the flash card activity, instruct students to create a patient scenario that correctly incorporates at least 10 of the following terms into their scenario:
• Barrel chest • Blue bloater • Chronic bronchitis • Cor pulmonale
• Emphysema • Exacerbation • Forced vital capacity (FVC) • Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV 1 ) • Hyperinflation of the alveoli
• Hypoxemic • Pink puffer • Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax • Tripod positioning Once they have created their scenario, students should meet in small groups to share their scenarios and provide feedback to each other. Tips Students should be encouraged to mention assessment findings, diagnostic testing, and medications used to incorporate 10 terms into a scenario. Goals Building from the flash card activity, this exercise forces students to think critically about COPD and how their various components interact. Online Application • Use the activity as written. Require students to post their scenario to the discussion in the learning management system and monitor (respond, question, and clarify) the discussion of their peers.
