P ERSONALIZED T EACHING P LAN T OPIC : COPD
In a Flash: Terminology Associated With COPD Directions Divide students into groups of two to four. Instruct the groups to make flash cards for the following terms associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): • Barrel chest: An AP diameter (anteroposterior diameter compared with the transverse diameter) of 2:2 rather than the normal diameter of 1:2. • Blue bloater: Patients with chronic bronchitis are typically obese, have hypoxemia, and thus appear cyanotic, giving them this nickname. • Chronic bronchitis: Disease that affects the small airways and is defined as the presence of cough and sputum production for at least 3 months in each of 2 consecutive years. • Cor pulmonale: Right-sided heart failure from chronic pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular enlargement. • Emphysema: A disease caused by destruction of the alveoli. • Exacerbation: An acute onset of symptoms from a chronic illness. • Forced vital capacity (FVC): The maximum volume of air exhaled during a forced expiration. • Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV 1 ): The volume of air expired in the first second of maximal expiration after maximal inspiration. • Hyperinflation of the alveoli: Occurs with emphysema when the lungs lose elasticity. • Hypoxemic: Low SpO 2 and PaO 2 . • Pink puffer: Nickname for a patient with emphysema because of their reddish complexion and puffing breathing pattern. • Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax: Pneumothorax that occurs in patients with underlying lung disease. • Tripod positioning: An upright sitting position to help ease the work of breathing. Once the groups have completed their flash cards, the students should quiz each other. Tips Developing a systematic plan to learn and apply terminology helps students be able to share the learning experience by using different methods of learning: visual, auditory, and psychomotor. Discussion enhances auditory learning, and the documentation of findings enhances both visual and psychomotor learning behaviors. Goals Flash cards are an excellent way to learn basic terminology. This activity helps students create a useful study aid for COPD.
