UNIT 4 Supporting Physiological Functioning

Procedure 32-11 ■ Applying Bandages (continued)

23. Continue to wrap the bandage, overlapping each turn by two-thirds. Align each bandage turn at the same position on the extremity.

27.Complete the wrap by making two circular turns and securing the bandage with tape or metal clips. Recurrent Turns The recurrent turns wrap is usually used on amputation stump or head. 28. Anchor the bandage by making two circular turns. 29.Fold the bandage back on itself; hold it against the body part with one hand. With the other hand, make a half turn per- pendicular to the circle turns and central to the distal end being bandaged.

30. Hold the central turn with one hand and fold the bandage back on itself; bring it over the distal end of the body part to the right of the center, overlapping the center turn by two-thirds of the width of the bandage. 31. Next, hold the bandage at the center with one hand as you bring the bandage back over the end to the left of center. Continue holding and folding the bandage back on itself, alternating right and left until the body part is covered. Overlap by two-thirds of the bandage width with each turn. 32. Start and return each turn to the midline or center of the body part and angle it slightly more each time to continue covering the body part. 33. Complete the bandage by mak- ing two circular turns and securing the bandage with tape or metal clips. 34.Assess circulation and comfort of the body part. What if . . . ■ Drainage breaks through the outer bandage more frequently than expected? Determine the cause of the drainage if possible (i.e., is it blood or serum?). Increased drainage may be a sign of infection and should be evaluated. You might need to change the dress- ing more often or an alternate, more absorbent type of dressing may be needed. Wound exudates can harm healing tis- sues. Dressings that are saturated should be changed as soon as possible to prevent prolonged moisture exposure or maceration.

24.Complete the wrap by making two circular turns and securing the bandage with tape or metal clips. Figure-Eight Turns The figure-eight wrap is used on joints (e.g., ankle, elbow). 25. Anchor the bandage by making two circular turns. 26. Wrap the bandage by ascending above the joint and descending below the joint to form a figure-eight. Continue to wrap the bandage, overlapping each turn by two-thirds. Align each bandage turn at the same position on the extremity.
